A Quick, 15-Minute Method That Will Have Your Upholstered Furniture Looking Spic and Span

Though many people associate deep cleaning with the spring season, we say that a good apartment cleaning session is a good idea any time of year – especially in the days leading up to the new year! Ring in 2021 with a refreshed space and even fresher upholstered furniture when you follow this simple method for cleaning these pieces with care.

Gather your supplies.

To clean your upholstered furniture, you will need a few supplies. These include:
• Vacuum
• A few clean white cloths
• Can of compressed air
• Gentle clear dish soap
• Horsehair upholstery brush
• Small bucket

Use suction for five minutes.

Using the upholstery attachment, the vacuum left to right in short, overlapping strokes, starting at the top of the piece and working toward the bottom. If working with delicate fabrics, like silk and linen, set the suction to low. Use the crevice nozzle to remove debris from all the nooks and crannies of your piece, and don’t forget to vacuum under cushions and around seams. Finally, use a can of compressed air to blast dirt from tufting and button nooks.

Conduct spot removal for five minutes.

Use a stain removing mist to attack stains on linen, cotton, jacquard, and polyester-acrylic blends. Follow with a powder-based cleaner, like one made for carpets and rugs, before gently rubbing the powder into the fabric with a dry cloth. Remove powder with a vacuum. For stains on leather or vinyl, spray a wood cleaner like Pledge on a cotton cloth before gently rubbing the area. Wipe with a dry cloth until no residue remains.

Wash the fabric for five minutes.

If the furniture you’re cleaning is water-safe (and marked with “W” or “WS” on its label), you can sudsing the upholstery. Pour about ½ teaspoon clear dish soap in a small bucket; run warm water into the bucket to create lots of suds. Dip an upholstery brush in the suds only – being careful to avoid getting the brush wet – and sweep the fabric in small sections, with a light touch. Avoid soaking the fabric. After you’ve “sudsed” the entire piece, wipe the fabric with a clean, damp cloth and let the furniture dry completely.
